Spiders decorate webs for a reason.

Charlotte may have weaved "some pig" into her web to help Wilber get to the fair but some Australian scientists are finding that many of the beautiful patterns and crosses we see in spider webs actually have a less then asthetic value.

"We really wanted to find out why the spiders were making a substantial investment in decorating their webs," National Geographic News quoted Dieter Hochuli, one of the authors of the study, as saying. Most people think the patterns are to help larger creatures see and avoid destroying the webs, but what these scientists found is nothing short of amazing.

It's not a web! It's a flower!

Insects don't see like we do, most only "see" a limited spectrum of light mostly in the ultraviolet range. Flowers, depending on thier colors and shapes, reflect this light in different ways. This is how insects can tell where a good meal might be or where danger might lie.

So, our smart little spider friends have figured this out!! The reason they create such intricate patterns in their webs is to mimic the flowers!! Yes, that's right, a spiders web is not only a giant sticky net to catch food, it's also designed to look like a tasty flower in the eyes of a bug!!

Amazing!
