These are the smallest of the wasp family, averaging only 1/2" long. They typically live in large underground nests made up of layers of hundreds of cells. The coloring is black bodies with yellow marking and clear wings. Yellowjackets feed on live insects, animal carcasses, and food in garbage cans and picnic sites.
